Tailroost

About

Hi, we're the Tailroost team

A small team of lifelong dog parents writing the honest pet care advice we wish we'd had — based on years of living with our own dogs, raising a litter from birth, and learning the hard way.

Our story

We started Tailroost because most dog care advice online is either too generic to be useful, written by someone who's never owned the breed they're describing, or buried under so many ads you can't tell what's a recommendation and what's a paid slot.

Behind this site are two dachshunds and the people who live with them. Hatsu, now 9, is a wire-haired brown with the kind of white-grey muzzle that comes from a life well lived. Five years ago she gave birth to a litter of six puppies. We kept one — her daughter Luna — and the other five went to close friends who still come over for the occasional reunion. Watching all six of those puppies grow up in different homes, with different routines and outcomes, taught us more about dog behavior than any book.

Everything you read here is filtered through that experience. We don't pretend to be veterinarians. We won't tell you what to do with your dog from a position we haven't earned. But we will tell you what worked for ours, what didn't, and what we'd do differently if we started over.

Meet Hatsu and Luna

Hatsu

9 years old · Wire-haired dachshund

The mother. Stubborn, scary-smart, and the best teacher we have ever had. Currently navigating the joys of senior dog life.

Luna

5 years old · Wire-haired dachshund

Hatsu's daughter, kept from the litter of 2020. Calmer than her mother but twice as food-motivated. Pure heart.

What you'll find here

Breed guides

Practical, honest profiles of popular dog breeds. We cover what owners actually need to know, not what makes a marketing brochure.

Training & care

Step-by-step guides for the everyday stuff: potty training, leash work, food, sleep, the awkward adolescent phase. All written from the trenches.

Puppy & senior care

From the first 8 weeks (we raised six puppies side-by-side) to navigating senior dog life with Hatsu, we cover both ends of the timeline.

How we write

  • We have owned the dogs we write about.

When we cover other breeds, we make it clear what is first-hand and what is research.

  • No diagnosing.

We are not vets. For anything medical, your vet is the source of truth — we'll point you there.

  • No fake reviews.

If we recommend a product, we have used it or thoroughly researched it. Affiliate links are always disclosed.

  • No filler.

We'd rather publish one useful article than five lazy ones. If a topic has been done well elsewhere, we link to it instead of rewriting it.
